November 1,1969 and a F-100F Super Sabre from the 416 TFS, and part of the world famous "Misty" program makes a hard left bank at the coast of the Gulf of Tonkin over the Dong Hoi river in order to head back inland under the weather which is delta sierra. Flying under the low ceiling the two Misty pilots might be able to spot southbound traffic on the Ho Chi Minh trail. Called a "fast fac" (forward air controller) the two seat F-100F was perfect for flying fast and low to spot enemy movement, mark it and call in other a/c to bomb the area. The early FAC's in Vietnam were slow propeller driven a/c that were highly vulnerable to ground fire and many were shot down. The Misty job was very high risk as the pilots had to draw fire to spot a target and then loiter over the area to direct other a/c as to where to lay their bombs. Many were shot down. Each of the 158 Misty pilot's had his own Misty number and were entitled to wear the Misty patch you see at the top of the artwork. This artist representation was created to honor all the Misty pilots and crews who were a part of the Commando Sabre Operation. The picture was featured in the 2013 Feb. issue of the Smithsonian Air & Space magazine which was paying tribute to the Misty pilots. This giclee image is printed on archival white 100% cotton canvas using aqueous pigmented inks that hold their color for over a hundred years if kept out of direct sunlight.
