This image was created to honor the pilots who volunteered for the Sam Suppression Mission in 1966 without first knowing what it was.  When they found out that the government wanted them to fly over North Vietnam trying to get the enemy to shoot a SAM at them so they could respond by shooting a missile at the control van that had launched the SAM, the famous response from one of the pilots was "You've got to be shitting me".

This was the beginning of  SAM suppression, this piece shows one the original four low time F-100F's that were based at Cannon AFB, New Mexico and they were upgraded with the electronic programs to pick up a SAM sites radar, thereby giving them a radar guided lock on to the enemy control van.  The first SAM suppression missions flown in North Vietnam, the F-100F's were loaded only with rockets to mark the SAM site when they found it, and F-105's would then bomb the site.  On April 16, 1966 they received the new AGM-45 Shrike Missile and this piece shows number 227 locked onto SAM site and preparing to launch their Shrike over North Vietnam.  Wild Weasel One lasted only a year and a half but they proved the concept worked and laid the ground work for Wild Weasel aircraft for the rest of the war.  Even today, the pilots who are tasked with the Sam Suppression mission in F-16's and F/A-18 Growlers still wear the Weasel patch with YGBSM on it.  It's a very dangerous mission.
