An HC-7 Navy Sea King Combat rescue helicopter has just heard that an A-4 Skyhawk had been hit over a North Vietnam target strike and the pilot had to eject miles inland. His wingman reported a good chute and was talking to the pilot on the ground and called for a North SAR helo to be dispatched. This image shows the helo, call sign "Big Mother" getting ready to go feet dry in an attempt to rescue the downed pilot. Above and to the left of the helo are two A-1 Skyraiders also assigned to the mission to attack any enemy troops trying to get to the pilot and to suppress enemy fire allowing the helo to get in and make the pick up. This helo crew are performing one of the most dangerous missions of the war. Flying slow and low they were open to all sorts of ground fire and during the pick up had to remain perfectly still to bring up the pilot.
Many helo's were shot down and the crews killed or captured. It was said that a rescue helo pilot and crew never had to pay for a drink in any bar during the war. Such was the respect the pilots flying missions over North Vietnam had for SAR crews, knowing that if shot down the helo crews would try the very best to rescue them. NO GREATER LOVE.
